Ox, House, Stick -- Karyn

Adults are welcome to contribute to the blog, you know. To prove it I want to share Ox, House, Stick: the History of our Alphabet by Don Robb, illustrated by Anne Smith. (Charlesbridge, 2007) Even grown-ups can learn a lot from this little book.
Most people take the alphabet for granted. Few know how many different ways letters have been written. Did you know that A is for ox? Our letter A was originally drawn as an ox head, with the legs pointing upward forming the ox's horns. Some of our letters were used before the Egyptian pyramids were built. Others are only a couple hundred years old. The alphabet is one of the world's most important inventions.
This is one of the most interesting books I've read this year.
