Ivy & Bean Take Care of the Babysitter -- Alex

Ivy & Bean take care of the babysitter written by Annie Barrows, illustrated by Sophie Blackall
Chronicle Books, 2008. (Ivy & Bean #4)
This was a pretty good book. In the book Bean's older sister, Nancy, babysits Bean. Nancy wasn't a very good babysitter because she did things she wasn't supposed to do.

Monday With a Mad Genius - Julia

Monday with a mad genius by Mary Pope Osborne
Random House, 2007 (Magic Tree House #38)
In this story Jack and Annie help Leonardo da Vinvi learn to fly. My favorite part is when they get their wings. I really liked this book.

Ox, House, Stick -- Karyn

Adults are welcome to contribute to the blog, you know. To prove it I want to share Ox, House, Stick: the History of our Alphabet by Don Robb, illustrated by Anne Smith. (Charlesbridge, 2007) Even grown-ups can learn a lot from this little book.
Most people take the alphabet for granted. Few know how many different ways letters have been written. Did you know that A is for ox? Our letter A was originally drawn as an ox head, with the legs pointing upward forming the ox's horns. Some of our letters were used before the Egyptian pyramids were built. Others are only a couple hundred years old. The alphabet is one of the world's most important inventions.
This is one of the most interesting books I've read this year.

Who's Afraid of Fourth Grade - Alex

Who's Afraid of Fourth Grade, by Nancy Krulik
Grosset and Dunlap, 2004. (Katie Kazoo, switcheroo series)
I really liked this book. This book was about when Katie starts fourth grade wuth a teacher who is new to her school & is very different than all of the other teachers. My favorite part is when Katie's band teacher gets his rock band to play songs at the school picnic.

Day of the Dragon King - Avery

Day of the Dragon King, by Mary Pope Osborne
Random House, 1998 (Magic Tree House series)
I liked Magic Tree House #4. It was set in my favorite Asian country, China. It's kind of romantic. A cowherd and a silk weaver fall in love, like in an ancient Chinese legend. Jack and Annie dress up in Chinese clothing like that worn 2000 years ago.

Moonlight on the Magic Flute - Alex

Moonlight on the Magic Flute, by Mary Pope Osborne
Random House, 2009 (Magic Tree House series)
This was one of the best Magic Tree House books that I've read. My favorite part was when Jack played the magic flute & Annie sang a song to tame the animals. This book takes place at a palace in Vienna, Austria & is about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart when he was little.

Dark Day in the Deep Sea - Julia

Dark Day in the Deep Sea, by Mary Pope Osborne
Random House, 2008 (Magic Tree House series)
I really liked the book. In the story, Jack and Annie meet some people that lived on a ship. Jack and Annie fell off the ship and were saved by a nice octopus. At the end Annie gets a shell she really likes.

Be Creative @ Ettrick Public Library

How many books will Ettrick kids read this summer?

In previous years we've kept track of our reading on the castle walls, on cars, and on barnyard critters. This year we're going to be creative by blogging the reading. Kids (age 98 and under) are invited to share information about the books they've read.
We can use any medium -- from text, to pictures, to video. (Watch for the full cast performance of with glamorous costumes, original music, and magnificent sets. )
